Walk your way to health

Walking has a profound impact on health

’tis Rosie, tonika health’s one and only osteopath! I don’t usually watch TV, but when I do…I watch the Kardashians or nerdy documentaries. There’s usually no in between. However, I wanted to share with you something else I saw that interested me (and I promise it has nothing to do with Kimmy K).

The show ‘The Doctor who Gave up Drugs’ was on one night, and I happened to flick over to see the experiment they were performing. Spoiler alert if you were hoping to watch series 1 episode 2…a group of patients who were on medication to reduce their risk of heart attacks and strokes were asked to do a brisk 30 minute walk 5 times a week for 8 weeks. The results were incredible – reduced drug dosages, less joint pain and SO importantly (despite being subjective) were reports of increased quality of life, increased happiness, AND increased motivation.

I’m writing about this because this is the exact message I want to convey to my patients. This is what we, as health professionals, mean when we talk about ‘moderate exercise’.

It doesn’t need to be hard work to be healthy.

Be kind to your body and have some fun moving about! Right now…stand up…pop on your favourite podcast, or listen to some awesome music, or ditch the earphones and practice mindfulness…whilst moving and going for a lovely walk outside. Is it raining outside, or too hot perhaps? Then why not have a boogie in your very own living room instead!

Go on…I DARE YOU.
