12 Feb Anxiety, Acupuncture and Summer
Hey there! It’s Amy, tonika health’s acupuncturist. Recently, I’ve been treating clients who are experiencing anxiety. Did you know that summer, joy and your heart are all related according to Chinese medicine? And that anxiety is often tied into this equation?
According to the five element theory in Chinese medicine, everything in the natural world is made of five elements – fire, earth, water, metal and wood. In the body, these elements correlate to organ pairs. For example earth relates to the spleen and stomach. All of these have their own energy pathways, called meridians, that also relate to emotions and seasons.
Summer relates to fire, the heart and pericardium, and joy. If you’re experiencing a fire or heart imbalance, you’re likely to experience excessive joy (such as feeling over excited, restless or having difficulty sleeping), insufficient joy (including fatigue, feeling flat or lacking motivation), or you may even switch between the two. As you can imagine, anxiety is often tied into the picture. Further, these issues often become more pronounced during the summertime.
How does acupuncture help with anxiety?
Acupuncture doesn’t replace healthy home/work environments, healthy eating or exercise. It also doesn’t replace counselling.
BUT…what acupuncture can do is provide profound and fundamental relaxation. Through regulating the sympathetic nervous system, acupuncture helps reduce symptoms of anxiety such as nervousness, shortness of breath, temperature fluctuations, sweating, tightness in the stomach, heart palpitations, nausea and sleeping difficulties.
Many patients who experience anxiety report that, after acupuncture, they:
- Feel more like themselves
- Sleep better
- Have less often and/or less severe panic attacks
- Have improved urine and bowel functions
